Picking out a book:
- pick a book you love (your excitement will build excitement in your student)
- pick a book that is age appropriate
- pick a book that has repetitive words and rhyme
- practice, practice, practice – (read the book out loud)

Reading a book:
- introduce yourself
- connect with the student (ex. ask a question that relates to your book – Do you like dinosaurs?)
- introduce the title, author and illustrator
- show the book to your audience – make eye contact – look up from the book
- involve your student in the story – repetition, rhyming and chanting
- use emotion in your voice
- be alive and enthusiastic the students will catch your enthusiasm
- have fun
- Helpful Hints:
- Show your child the cover page. Explain what the story is about.
- Run your finger along the words as you read them.
- Silly sounds, especially animal sounds, are fun to make.
- Choose books about events in his/her life such as starting preschool, going to the dentist, getting a new pet, or moving to a new home.
- Make the story come alive. Create voices for the story characters.
- Ask questions about the story. What do you think will happen next? What is this?
- Let your child ask questions about the story. Talk about familiar activities and objects.
- Let your child retell the story.
- Have your child sit close while reading.
- Children like ...
- books without words;
- alphabet and counting books;
- books about families, friends, and going to school;
